The shape becomes the memory

Each letter is transformed into an object that begins with that letter — and the object's shape forms the letter itself.

The letter σ formed as a snail's shell
The letter φ formed as a coiled snake
The letter ν formed as a bat with folded wings

σ isn't just “σ for σαλιγκάρι” (snail) — the letter is the shell of the snail. When children see the letter, they remember the object. When they see the object, they recognise the letter.

Made by a Greek dad in China

Child's hands playing with the alphabet cards

Hi, I'm Theo — a Greek university professor of computational art living with my family in China. My twins speak Chinese as their first language, so I created these cards to help them learn the Greek alphabet in a way that felt playful and intuitive.

Instead of memorising abstract symbols, my children associated each letter with a familiar image. They learned the alphabet surprisingly quickly — and had fun doing it. Even now they point at Greek letters in the wild and shout things like: “Μπαμπά, ν όπως νυχτερίδα!”

I originally made these for my kids, but after blogging about them, lots of people got in touch asking me to make them widely available.

Backed by how children actually remember

The cards use a technique called embedded picture mnemonics: each object is chosen because its shape resembles the letter it begins with. Research on visual mnemonics shows that linking abstract symbols to meaningful images significantly helps early letter learning and recall — young children remember pictures and shapes far more easily than abstract marks. Here, the letter, the word, and the image all reinforce each other.

Questions parents ask

What age is this for?

Designed for ages 3+ — and honestly enjoyed by anyone learning the Greek alphabet, including adults starting from zero.

Do I need to speak Greek?

No. Each card works visually, the booklet comes in English and Greek, and the games need no Greek from the grown-up. Many of our families are diaspora households where the kids are learning Greek as a second (or third) language.

Where do you ship, and how fast?
